About
Welcome to Garten, a delightful culinary gem nestled in Severna Park, Maryland. Located at 849 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd, Garten redefines the notion of traditional German cuisine with a contemporary twist that appeals to modern palates. This unique eatery presents an inviting atmosphere perfect for casual dining or special occasions, whether you're enjoying the fresh air on the outdoor patio or the cozy indoor space adorned with vibrant decor.
As a food lover, I was captivated by Garten’s commitment to farm-to-table dining. Their dishes are not just meals; they are crafted experiences bursting with fresh ingredients, many sourced directly from their own flourishing garden. Imagine indulging in the Fall Salad for $15, a crisp medley of seasonal produce that embodies the essence of autumn on your plate. Alternatively, the classic Garten Caesar, priced at $15, reinterprets a beloved staple with its own special flair.
But there's more to Garten than just salads. Their sides range from Hot German Potato Salad to Beer Braised Kraut, each offering a taste of authentic German flavors with a modern twist. The Smoked Salmon Potato Pancakes at $18 stand out as a must-try, savory yet delicate, while the Challah Stuffed French Toast at $17 invites customers to savor a sweet breakfast delight.
What truly captures the essence of a visit to Garten is the ambiance, as echoed in clients’ rave reviews. One regular, Jason Zmuda, praised the "excellent atmosphere,” remarking on the charm of feeling transported away from the neighborhood into a food haven. Guests have also expressed appreciation for the restaurant's ability to cater to diverse dietary needs, making it an ideal spot for group celebrations.
Elisabeth Lee highlighted Garten's ability to transform a rehearsal dinner into a vivid memory, citing the outstanding service and delicious food that complemented the joyful occasion. The restaurant’s staff, as noted by many patrons, goes above and beyond, crafting not just meals but moments that linger in memory.
From their creative cocktails adorned with edible flowers to dessert options like the playful Garten Dirt served in a terracotta pot, every detail at Garten conveys a passion for food and hospitality. Emem Ifon captured it beautifully, expressing how the venue balances a modern beer garden aesthetic with a welcoming atmosphere, ensuring that every visit feels special.
Whether you're in the mood for a casual meal or celebrating life's milestones, Garten promises a dining experience that is both delightful and unforgettable. Come for the food, stay for the ambiance, and leave with a heart full of wonderful memories.
“ Sure, it's not all traditional German food, it's more of a foodie adaptation of German food. But everything we had was fantastic! First, the atmosphere is excellent, you feel like you're way out of the normal neighborhood you're in. Second, go look around the land, the freshly grown tomatoes, basil, mint, rosemary, etc were great to see. Plus their many flowers and bees. The food: we had a catfish sandwich and a chicken schnitzel sandwich, both came out hot and very crispy. We've been to Bavaria many times and this did not disappoint at all. Their fries were some of the best we've had. I got the coleslaw which was my favorite style, clear with a heavy celery seed accent. They unfortunately got rid of the red cabbage so I tried the sauerkraut, which was very good but way on the salty side. Overall, my wife even said it was one of the most pleasant dining experiences she's had in the Annapolis area in a very long time, and I agree! ”
“ We really enjoy Garten! It is our local go-to for a great meal and group celebrations. Their food and drinks are delicious and they have something for everyone (even our picky and dietary restrictive eaters). Having recently reserved a table for a party of 12, the owner and staff were all very helpful and accommodated all of our needs with a special touch. Great people, food/drinks! ”
“ Great restaurant with indoor and outdoor options. Modern twist on a German beer garden but with lots of wine options as well. Every drink was a special creation. Ambiance and decor very welcoming. You could feel the farm to table vibes. Everything tastes fresh and prepared full of flavor. ”
“ UPDATE: I debated deleting my initial review and writing a new one vs. updating, but the dedication to excellence that GM Chris showed us after reading my first review is part of what changed from 2 to 5 stars. Chris immediately reached out to apologize for how their now-former employee had treated us, and to invite my family back for the experience we should have had. We were greeted and seated quickly with front row seats to DJ Crawdads. Chris personally gave us recommendations on cocktails, although you can't go wrong with any cocktail on the menu, which are all served in such pretty glassware, and garnished with fresh flowers from their garden. We said my husband is pescatarian, and Chris gave us insightful recommendations on the food menu. Our server was knowledgable, intuitive, and delightful. DJ Crawdads simultaneously created and upscale and chill atmosphere. The music was the perfect volume to enjoy the sounds and still allow conversation. Highly recommend going on a day that he will be there! Our food was phenomenal and beautiful. We started with the Garten pickles and veggies which were crisp, tangy, and refreshing. Our server suggested the burrata as a starter. GET THIS. Ask for an extra slice of grilled bread with it, because you will want consume every drop, and licking the plate is frowned upon in public. Chris recommended a special kimchi and tofu dish, including information on where the ingredients had been sourced. My husband said it was one of the best dishes he's ever had. My son gave the pretzels another shot; devoured them. I had the pork tenderloin; tender and flavorful. Dessert time was beer-battered apple rings, and Garten Dirt, served in a terracotta flower pot dish and the spoon was even shaped like a little shovel. We were impressed by the creative attention to detail. There were fans outside that provided a nice breeze on a warm evening, and I saw a basket of woven blankets that are for cooler days. String lights created a smooth transition at sunset and, mixed with the music, created an ambiance of magic - the cocktails helped, too! This was a beautiful, unique, and impressive evening, and we can't wait to go back with friends! (1st visit): We were very impressed by the beautiful grounds, murals, clean bathrooms, and great music when we first arrived. Our server came to get our drink orders, and when I asked what her favorite brunch drink was, she flippantly responded, “oh, I don’t drink or eat here. I only come here to make money.” I don’t know what I was supposed to do with that, so after many awkward, speechless seconds she told me the drink other people order most often. She was nice during our other interaction, which was only to give us the check after I had to ask someone to have her bring it to us. Unfortunately, that exchange totally killed the vibe at our table when she left. We are positive people and tried to move past that weird interaction, but were disappointed again when one of the appetizers came out (we ordered three appetizers, and they all came out so far apart that one would be long gone before the next arrived). The first thing was a 17 salmon spread which was served with twelve Ritz crackers that were just sliding around on a separate dish, making it look sparse and cheap, and not exactly the adult version of cracker I’d expected, and certainly not so few. The server didn’t come back for us to be able to ask for more crackers, so we finished the spread with our forks. It tasted okay. Eventually, our other dishes came out about ten minutes apart, which were also just okay despite the prices being on the higher side. (15 for a side Caesar salad with no meat, for example) We also ordered the pretzels to take home to our son, and they were very dark and tasted burnt. I think that may be how they were supposed to be, just not the taste we like. Overall, our experience did not meet our expectations, and I can’t help but think we would have overlooked some of the issues if the server hadn’t made that first comment making us feel dumb for being there to eat and drink. ”
“ The Garten did a fantastic job hosting our rehearsal dinner the evening before our wedding. The service was outstanding, they took excellent care of us and graciously accommodated a group slightly larger than expected. They even had a microphone set up for speeches, which made the evening feel extra special. We had a great time, and the food and drinks were absolutely delicious. Highly recommend The Garten for any special event or celebration! ”
“ My husband and I absolutely love Garten!! We’ve been there a few times now and love the food and cocktails. All of the food we’ve ordered has been super unique, small plate style of food and very fresh tasting. Everything has such great flavor! I wasn’t sure how I would like the German style, and was hesitant to go when I saw “beer garden” (since I’m not a beer person) but it’s been great and the menu always has plenty of options and lots of great cocktails! The first time we went, I ordered a fall type salad with squash and goat cheese for dinner thinking it would just be an average salad. I couldn’t believe how much flavor was in such a simple salad and I couldn’t stop thinking about it all week lol! I also ordered the Garten dirt for dessert and it was 5 stars. Like a sophisticated version of the type from childhood- so good!! I order it every time I go now lol. The atmosphere is so beautiful- like a true garden. I’m super excited to go back in warmer weather and sit outside on their cute patio! All of the staff who have served us were extremely friendly and helpful in suggestions of things to try. I’m so happy they’re located conveniently in Severna Park so that we don’t have to drive into a city for great food! Plenty of parking. I can’t wait to go back for this Valentine’s Day! Definitely would highly recommend checking this place out if you haven’t yet, and like more modern style restaurants!! It’s a vibe! (Don’t get it twisted, this isn’t Outback) ”
“ What a wonderful place to have brunch on a Sunday. Bright atmosphere and lots of natural decor make it a great place to relax while you dine. Their Schnitzel Sandwich is so good that you won't even put it down once you take the first bite. Make sure you bring your appetite if you have the Challah Stuffed French Toast. It was almost more than one person could handle. Make sure to start off with the Smoked Salmon Dip starter, as it will get you excited for what's to come. You can really see and taste the passion that is put into the food by their chef. Next visit, I will make sure to try their recommended desert as I was so full from the wonderful food. Thank you Garten! ”
“ My wife and I had a great experience at Garten today! We arrived 30 minutes early to our reservation and they were generous enough to seat us outside by the heaters and provide us drinks. We were inside in 15 minutes. The decor is beautiful. Tall ceilings, beautifully decorated, lots of plants and windows, and a few musicians playing soft Christmas music. Just gorgeous! We were seating by the (real!) fireplace where they had our drinks ready for us. My wife got the adult apple cider which came warm, with rum and spiced sweet butter. I got a glass of bubbly Pinot. Both were excellent and the glasses were quite cute! For an appetizer we had the burrata. This. Was. Everything. Get this and ask for extra bread! Don’t be put off by the mandarin oranges...it’s perfect. The sour dough was fresh and delicious, it was nutty with a touch of acidity. I will go back just for this! For our entrees my wife had the G Burger (with bratwurst patties) and the German potato salad. I had the Rueben which was to die for and deli potato salad. I just at the other half for dinner. Service was amazing. We had several people taking care of us at once and it was great. We will be back! ”
